Chapter 325: Chapter 325: Timothy
Doctor Hale stiffened for a moment, clearly displeased at being dismissed by someone younger, but she ultimately nodded and left with a curt, "Yes, Doctor Timothy."
Kael watched the exchange, his eyes narrowing ever so slightly.
’Doctor Timothy?’
’Why is someone with such a polished appearance working in this chaotic, makeshift hospital?’
Doctor Timothy stepped forward, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses with calm precision. His aura was gentle, refined, even scholarly, an incongruous presence amid the chaotic noise of the hospital.
He knelt beside Ember with a soft, reassuring smile.
"Don’t worry," he said to Kael in a tone that seemed considerate. "Let me take a look at your sister. I’ll make sure nothing is overlooked."
Ember kept her eyes half-closed, breathing evenly, still maintaining the act of unconsciousness.
Kael stepped back reluctantly, giving Timothy space.
Timothy gently placed two fingers on Ember’s wrist to check her pulse.
His touch was light. Professional. Nothing inappropriate.
But as Kael watched him, something in the man’s demeanor made him tense.
Timothy shifted his glasses again, then slowly moved Ember’s eyelids up to check her pupil response. Everything was by the book... almost too by the book.
A minute later, Timothy hummed softly. "Her vitals are steady. Pulse stable. Breathing normally. There is no sign of dehydration or shock."
Kael kept his face despairing, but inside...
’So far, so normal.’
Timothy, however, did something unexpected.
He leaned slightly closer to Ember’s ear. Too close.
Kael’s muscles tightened.
But Timothy didn’t touch her inappropriately. Instead, he whispered...
"Your breathing is too controlled. Pretending to be unconscious requires more subtlety."
Kael’s heart dropped.
Ember’s eyes snapped open.
Timothy smiled politely as he straightened. "Hello, Miss Ember. It’s a pleasure to meet you properly."
Ember and Kael gritted their teeth, realizing that they failed miserably.
With their covers blown, they couldn’t continue to linger, and hence, the siblings could only give up.
Timothy gave them one last glance before leaving.
"Sigh! I will be ashamed to even look at Ivy! How can we fail so miserably!" Ember murmured, covering her face in embarrassment.
"But from the looks of it, there is no problem with the doctors," Kael concluded. Even though they had only met two doctors, it was enough to tell them about the rest.
"Hm..." Ember nodded, then stood up. "We should leave, instead of causing any more nuisance!"
Kael and Ember were about to leave when Ember heard an unfamiliar yet familiar voice.
"Then what am I supposed to do?! Just watch her die?"
Ember turned around mechanically and was surprised. "Eh? Keith."
Even Kael recognized the man. He was Keith, Ember’s best friend’s husband.
Seeing despair on his face, both Kael and Ember were stunned.
The Keith they knew was a confident, famous football player radiating an arrogant yet noble aura.
While Keith they were seeing... looked on the verge of death.
Yet they were thrilled to meet him and decided to attract his attention.
Ember immediately walked up to him and tapped on his shoulder. "Keith, why are you here..."
Midway through her sentence, Ember froze because she saw someone very familiar. Pearl, her best friend... who looked like she was going to give birth.
"Pearl? Oh my god! What has happened to her?"
The moment Keith saw Ember and Kael approaching, he paused mid-stride before instantly rushing toward them as though clinging to his last thread of hope.
He grabbed Ember’s hand tightly and asked breathlessly,
"Are you a resident of this base?"
When Ember nodded, Keith’s eyes lit up with an almost painful brightness, like someone who had finally found the lifeline he had been desperately searching for.
Without wasting a second, he explained, voice trembling and strained, that his wife had gone into premature labor and was in urgent need of intravenous saline.
He pleaded that if Ember had even a single bottle, he would be eternally grateful, bowing his head repeatedly as if worshipping a deity.
Hearing those words, Ember immediately replied, "I’m not sick, and I wasn’t allotted any saline. But I can ask my sister for help."
The relief that washed over Keith’s face was almost heart-wrenching. He clapped Ember’s hands together, practically begging,
"Please... please help me. If you save her, I will repay you even if it takes my entire life."
Ember gently pulled her hands away and stated in a calmer tone, "There’s no need to be so emotional. I’m doing this for my best friend."
Keith nodded vigorously, wiping his tears in haste before running off toward the patient ward with frantic steps, as though afraid that even a moment of delay would seal Pearl’s fate.
Kael left, understanding Ember’s signal.
Meanwhile, Ember turned to Keith, whose face was twisted with worry, and gently placed a hand on his arm to console him.
"My brother will be back in ten minutes at most. He’ll bring saline. Pearl isn’t on the verge of death, so stop despairing like the sky is falling."
Keith couldn’t stop the sobs that broke from his chest. He felt as if today he would have no choice but to watch his wife die right before his eyes.
Pearl was not merely his wife; she was the dream he had chased since his youth.
Keith had first seen her when he visited her university for an event. She had been dancing under the stage lights, elegant and radiant, her every movement captivating the audience.
Keith had been mesmerized instantly. At that time, Pearl was the campus belle, a title she shared with Ember and another girl.
Many men desired her, admired her, and envied anyone who could get close to her.
It was thanks to Keith’s fame that he managed to approach her easily.
And when they began going on dates, Keith discovered something that deepened their bond even further... they shared similar hobbies and interests.
Keith had no family. His parents had died before his rise to fame, and the absence sank deeply into him.
Though he still had distant relatives, they were nothing but greedy leeches who only reached out to extort money.
Eventually, he had cut ties altogether, signing legal agreements that forbade them from disturbing his life again.
