Chapter 327: Chapter 327: Deep Investigation
The fallen man glared venomously at Ember, his eyes red with hatred and resentment.
He spat angrily.
"Why did you stop me?! I wanted to deal with that poisonous woman! She claims to be the representative of the base but refuses to allocate saline to us! And now... Now she has the audacity to pull out electrolyte powder when she didn’t give us even a single packet?! "
Hearing those words, Ivy’s brows knitted together, a cold frown forming on her face.
Ember, however, was furious. She took a threatening step forward and snapped,
"Did you not hear clearly?! She just said she would ask someone to transport the electrolytes! Do you have to twist every word she says?! "
But the man, still panting from the pain of Ember’s kick, pointed toward the corner with trembling, accusatory fingers.
"That... That is my child!" he shouted. "He has been unconscious for hours because of the lack of saline! And she... she stands here with supplies and doesn’t give them to us!"
Ivy paused, her eyes watching the man with interest. "How long has she been unconscious?"
"10 hours!" The man glared at Ivy resentfully. From his perspective, Ivy was nothing but a two-faced bitch. When he had first joined the base, he had admired her and was grateful to Ivy.
Because of Ivy, he was able to rebuild his life, but once his family was affected and he saw they were on the verge of dying but still weren’t granted any resources, he felt hatred rising in his heart.
Especially the scene where Ivy helped her own friend provoked the nameless fury rising in his heart.
"10 hours... I see," Ivy murmured and turned toward Dr. Hale. "What’s going on? As far as I remember, I had transported 10,000 saline bottles just a few hours ago. Even if the entire base, which only had a population of 2000, came here for treatment, this situation shouldn’t arise at all."
This time, the man and all the other patients were stunned, while Dr. Hale looked confused.
"Miss Ivy, we haven’t received any saline bottles at all in the past few hours."
Ivy’s expression turned cold, while the patients and the man realized what was going on, and rage surged under in their hearts.
"Hm? Interesting. Where is Jessica? I want to meet her." Ivy’s dangerous aura made the chaotic scene of the hospital calm down.
Rage wasn’t the only emotion present on her face... no... it was the ruthlessness in her eyes, which made everyone scared.
Many individuals lowered their heads in fear.
"She..." Dr. Hale started, but her words were cut off the next second because Jessica’s voice sounded, "I am here."
The equally confused expression on Jessica made everyone hold their breath, because everyone realized that a big drama was going to ensue soon.
"Jessica, I seem to have heard something very strange. Care to enlighten me?" Ivy’s calm voice was tinged with danger, as if she were a predator waiting for her prey to make a mistake and pounce on her.
Jessica nodded, and Ivy asked, "Where are the saline bottles I had handed you this afternoon?"
"In the medicine room." Jessica blinked innocently; her act was so convincing that even Ember fell for it. But Ivy noticed a subtle detail...
Jessica was blinking too much.
"Then let’s check. I remember I had deployed 10,000 saline bottles. With all the people lying here... I guess 2000 of them have been used up, which leaves us with 8000 of them." Ivy’s calculations made Jessica gulp.
Jessica could feel the varying gazes on her and felt her heart tremble. Clenching her fist, she gave a calm nod and said, "Yes. There are 8000 saline bottles."
"Oh? Then why aren’t these survivors provided with saline bottles?" Ivy’s question hit the nail on the crux of the problem.
The weight of curious gaze almost crushed Jessica, and she explained, "I... I forgot to tell the doctors about the arrival of those saline bottles."
"Hm? Okay. Then, Doctor Hale, please go and check the inventory." Ivy motioned, and Dr. Hale, as if waiting for this moment, left.
Time ticked by, and no one dared to speak. Even Ivy’s siblings were stunned speechless by her cold aura.
Jessica frantically tried to find an excuse in her mind; unfortunately for her, Dr. Hale was much faster.
"Miss Ivy, there is no saline bottle." She reported casting a faint glance in Jessica’s direction, whose legs gave out, and she collapsed on the ground.
The patients’ and their family members’ hungry eyes filled with judgment latched onto her, making her realize how bleak her future was going to be.
"Miss Jessica, care to explain?" Ivy asked, and Jessica trembled all over before shouting, "It wasn’t me! They forced me! I am innocent too!"
"Who forced you?" Ivy arched her brow in interest.
"They... they are a secret organization; they have my parents... and siblings..." Jessica cried, but Ivy chuckled as if she had heard the funniest joke.
"Parents, you say?"
"Yes."
"How strange... because from what I have investigated, your parents were vacationing in their house, while the siblings you claim to be kidnapped are causing havoc in your name."
Ivy’s words chilled Jessica’s heart, and she only had one thought in her heart: ’I should confess.’
Feeling Ivy’s gaze as if she were giving her the chance to redeem herself, Jessica admitted, "My boyfriend sold the saline bottle privately to make a profit."
"What the hell! Weren’t you scared that you would be exposed someday?" Doctor Hale was stunned by Jessica’s dumb move.
Ivy smirked. She had investigated Jessica thoroughly in the past few hours and reached a certain interesting conclusion: "From how manipulative her boyfriend was... maybe not."
In the past hours, Ivy got to know that Jessica had recently hooked up with a ’rich’ boyfriend, who promised to marry Jessica and gift her real estate in Ivy’s base, and even let her live on passive income as long as Jessica helps him once.
Jessica would have turned him down if it weren’t for her greed for a permanent house.
