Chapter 321: Chapter 321: Eviction
In her previous life, this news was known after two years of the apocalypse. At that time, Angelina was already starting to regret her decision to break off her engagement with Damien.
Occasionally, she used to drop by and tell about the gossip she had heard at the base.
At that time, Ivy had heard Angelina lament that if she had known about the news, she would have checked out and tried to loot the hospital and present it to Seraphina as filial piety.
Her words were ridiculous to the point that Ivy laughed and ended up getting beaten.
Now... Ivy decided to use that news as the bait.
’If she were reborn, she would definitely remember the abandoned hospital. All I need to do is drop the hint.’
With her plan forming clearly in her mind, Ivy rose from the chair and swiftly walked out of the office. She caught up to Martha before the woman reached the corridor’s end.
"Martha," Ivy called.
Martha stopped immediately and turned around. Ivy paused for a moment, then said in a calm tone,
"Pretend to talk with your assistant about the base preparing to explore the abandoned hospital and secretly observe her reaction."
"So... I don’t need to give her the eviction notice?" Martha asked with a puzzled expression.
"No. Give her the eviction notice. And in case they ask for reasons, just tell them that it’s because of the discrepancies in the background checking. Ivy stated calmly. Whatever Angelina’s response was, Ivy would use it to decide whether she needed to kill Angelina or just let fate decide her future.
Anyhow, she wasn’t going to let those evil people live in her base. If they dare to abuse her when she is vulnerable. God knows how easily they can betray her.
What made her even more concerned was... the safety of her own base. She had earlier asked the staff to conduct a thorough background check before they let anyone in.
Yet this group of bad seeds was able to enter her base. This could only mean that either the staff was using a flawed method for background verification, or... there was corruption going on in her base.
The moment she thought about the latter possibility, Ivy’s eyes turned cold.
’Seems like... I have been too lenient on the base’s citizens.’
However, she didn’t jump to any conclusion. She turned to Martha and stated in a calm voice, "After this task is done, meet me in my office."
Martha nodded and soon left with her team. In order to make sure that no mishap happens during the eviction, five men and two strong men were assigned to the eviction team.
Till now, none of the base citizens have crossed the line, making the eviction team feel as if they were useless. But today, they were finally given the chance to perform. To say that they weren’t excited would be a lie.
Reaching outside Angelina’s house, Martha knocked on the door loudly.
Her mannerisms reflected as if she were there to punish someone. And since she didn’t even think of hiding her movements, the people in the neighboring house peeked outside with a look of interest.
Kate was irritated by the loud banging and swung open the door with a displeased expression, "What the hell! Why are you banging on my door, as if you want to break it..."
Midway through her sentence, she faltered. Looking at Martha, all the arrogance vanished into thin air, and she immediately put on a smile. "Eh? Miss Martha? What are you doing here?"
Who doesn’t know Martha?
"What brings you here, Miss Martha? Is there... some kind of issue?" She asked cautiously, the fake politeness dripping from her voice like syrup.
Martha didn’t bother with pleasantries. She pushed her glasses up the bridge of her nose, her gaze sharp and unforgiving.
"Miss Kate, I am here to give you the eviction notice."
Kate froze, her expression stiffening as though someone had poured ice water down her back.
The polite smile on her lips twitched, threatening to crumble under the weight of Martha’s words.
"Eviction... notice?" she repeated weakly, her voice cracking despite her effort to stay composed.
"Yes. You and your family are required to leave the base immediately. Pack your belongings."
Kate’s face instantly drained of color, and her panic flashed openly before she could control it.
"W... Wait, Miss Martha, there must be... There has to be some kind of misunderstanding, right? We haven’t done anything wrong!"
Martha did not flinch. "The base found inconsistencies in your background verification. That alone warrants immediate removal."
Behind Kate, Arthur stepped forward with a deep frown. "We passed all the checks. How can there be inconsistencies?"
Though he said so, his heart was beating rapidly, wondering if they had found out about the trick he had used...
Just then, Angelina and Marcus came out too. They were attracted by the commotion.
Martha, remembering Ivy’s instruction, gave a look to her assistant and stated to the Evans family. "We don’t know how you dodged the background verification, but we will find it eventually. For now, please leave, or else..."
She left her words hanging, letting them feel the presence of a knife near their necks, and turned to leave.
Martha’s assistant took a step closer, playing his role perfectly. He lifted his tablet, glanced at it meaningfully, and said in an "accidental" loud whisper meant only for Angelina’s ears,
"The exploration team will depart soon. The abandoned hospital is the next target for the rescue."
At that exact moment, Martha turned and stared at the Evans family coldly. "I hope my message is clear."
In reality, she had turned to gauge Angelina’s reaction. Seeing the confusion mixed with slight tension, Martha turned around and left.
After returning to Ivy’s office, she reported her findings.
Ivy frowned in confusion, hearing Martha’s words.
’Wait... if Angelina doesn’t know any recognition... it could only mean that she isn’t reborn... Was my assumption wrong all along?’
