Chapter 295: Chapter 295: Anesthesia
A glint flashed in Ivy’s eyes, and she lowered her head, acting all meek and obedient; however, her eyes were flashing with excitement.
Isaac called out the other guards to follow him. One by one, the soldiers started to pick up the unconscious bodies scattered around the clearing.
Isaac barked out quick orders, his tone sharp but uneasy. "Get them to the trucks! The captain said the next batch leaves in fifteen minutes!"
The guards moved hastily, dragging the prisoners toward the metal doors at the far end of the clearing. Ivy kept her head low, her expression blank, but beneath her lowered lashes, her sharp gaze followed every movement.
Now her doubts were confirmed; these people had been doing this work way before the apocalypse.
Otherwise, it would be impossible to build a road in an apocalypse where finding a shelter and having enough food is the main quest of humanity.
A few of the captives started to struggle, and Isaac, irritated by their attempt and worried about the variables, immediately shouted, "Inject them with anesthesia!"
Ivy’s eyes sparkled. Anesthesia! She was immune to anesthesia! As long as they don’t use any particularly strong anesthesia, she will be able to stay conscious and also improvise.
The only problem was... Ember might fall unconscious.
’I need to find a way... ’ Ivy bit her lips and worriedly looked at Ember before an idea appeared in her mind.
A guard shoved a crate toward the nearest workbench. On it lay a row of syringes and several dark ampoules.
One by one, the guards administered the injections.
Once the guards reached Ember, they quickly bent down, but Ivy immediately covered Ember with her body and sobbed, "Please don’t! My sister has an allergy to anesthesia!" Ivy cried, her voice trembling as she clutched Ember tightly.
Her tears flowed freely, dripping onto Ember’s face as if she were utterly desperate.
The guard paused mid-motion, glancing uncertainly at Isaac. "Sir, she says the woman’s allergic."
Isaac scoffed. "Do you think I care? Inject her. If she dies, that just means less trouble for us."
Ivy’s heart raced. ’Damn it, that didn’t work.’
She clung tighter to Ember, refusing to let go. "Please! If she dies, you’ll lose money! Look at her face... someone will pay more for her alive!"
Ember almost wanted to give Ivy a thumbs-up. Her sister has the potential to be a salesperson!
That caught Isaac’s attention. He tilted his head, his eyes narrowing as he studied Ember’s delicate features.
Her beauty wasn’t ordinary; it had that soft glow that made people pause, even in a place as rotten as this.
He hesitated for a moment, then waved his hand lazily. "Fine. Skip her for now. But the other one...inject her first."
Ivy froze on the surface but rejoiced in her heart.
’So, they’ll inject me instead... perfect.’
She forced her trembling lips into a weak smile, pretending to surrender. "O-Okay... just don’t hurt her."
The guard seized her arm roughly, pushing the needle in. The moment the liquid entered her veins, Ivy’s body shuddered... but she didn’t lose consciousness.
Instead, she let her eyes roll back slightly, her breathing slow and shallow.
The guard sneered. "Another one down."
He let her arm fall limply to the ground.
"Ivy! Why did you let them administer anesthesia to you? If you fall asleep, you will be in grave danger!" Ember whispered anxiously.
Their position was rather awkward. Ivy was lying on Ember’s curled-up body, with Ivy’s ears near Ember, and Ember’s face was covered with Ivy’s body.
From her lowered lashes, Ivy watched as the guards turned their attention away.
When the last guard moved off to prepare the others for transport, Ivy whispered almost imperceptibly, "Don’t move. Pretend to faint."
Ember’s jaw tightened, but she obeyed, letting her head fall to the side.
Isaac’s voice boomed through the chamber. "Load them up! The captain wants this batch gone before sundown!"
The group of guards scrambled to obey, lifting the bound captives one by one. Ivy stayed still, her body limp and eyes half-closed.
They roughly finished loading everyone up in a huge truck and closed the truck’s door.
Ember checked her surroundings before anxiously starting to find Ivy. "Ivy? Ivy? Where are you? Can you hear me?"
"I am here!" Ivy lifted her hand with difficulty. Those people definitely held a grudge against her; otherwise, why would they place such heavy people on her? She could almost feel her bones breaking!
Ember rushed to Ivy’s location, fear flashing in her eyes.
The moment she saw Ivy struggling like a turtle flipped on its back, she almost burst into laughter.
Ivy truly looked funny... like a white peach trying to escape from two huge potatoes weighing heavily on her.
Taking a deep breath, Ember hurried forward and pulled Ivy up.
Once Ivy was outside, she gasped for air, panting heavily.
"I’m never... ever doing that again," she declared between breaths. "No more of these crazy plans! This was too much."
Hearing that, Ember couldn’t help but laugh.
"We told you from the start that you didn’t need to be part of this. We could’ve just rescued everyone using brute force. You were the one who wanted a different plan."
Ivy shook her head with a weary sigh. "Let’s just check if anyone else is awake first."
Ember nodded and immediately began checking everyone’s pulse. Though she wasn’t a doctor... her degree was in business, her mother and father were both doctors, and she had learned a few things from them.
Ivy took Helena and Victor out of her temporal storage. Once they appeared, the two immediately started checking every single person.
They didn’t even need anyone to brief them about the situation.
When they confirmed that everyone was merely unconscious, Ivy, who was slightly swaying from the truck’s movement, muttered, "I’ll store everyone in my temporal space."
With a wave of her hand, all the captives vanished instantly.
Silas, Kael, and Felix then emerged from the storage. They exchanged glances before turning to Helena and Victor.
