Chapter 270: Chapter 270: Mystery
This small action didn’t escape Ember’s eyes; she chuckled and motioned for him to eat.
Seeing this, Jay at first shook his head, but under the insistent gazes of the Nightbane family, he could only start eating slowly.
Once he tasted the fish curry, he felt as if he had ascended to heaven.
The next second, he began to wolf down the food.
Felix watched the entire scene and rolled his eyes in disdain.
"Such a hillbilly."
Hearing that, Ember shot him a furious glance and warned him with her eyes. Felix ignored her.
Kael who finally couldn’t stand his brother’s arrogance, said coldly,
"Have you forgotten how you had acted like a country bumpkin the first time Ivy whipped up so many dishes?"
Felix glared at Kale, looking as if he might cry.
.............
After Jay was fed and had gone to sleep, Ember looked at her family. They exchanged a glance before she said softly,
"Now we can move to the next platter of the plan."
Hearing that, the Nightbane family immediately nodded, though Helena and Victor were not in favor of it.
Still, they knew it was what the children had decided and didn’t want to interfere.
Instead, they said they would retire first. No one stopped them as Helena and Victor slowly left.
Ember stared at their backs and asked with a deep look in her eyes, "Don’t you feel Mom and Dad are hiding something from us?"
Felix rolled his eyes and said,
"You’re overthinking. If they were truly hiding something, wouldn’t we have noticed? How could we, their children, not realize it?"
Kael, who had been lost in thought, shook his head and said, "I agree with Ember. They do seem to be hiding something."
Ember paused and thought, then said softly, "It started when Ivy told us about her past life."
Hearing that, Felix and Kael fell silent and began thinking deeply.
They realized she was right. Since Ivy had spoken about her past life, their parents had grown distant, or, more precisely, had begun to hide things from them.
Ember turned to her brother. "I strongly suspect there’s some mystery about Ivy that Mom and Dad know. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have reacted so calmly."
At first, when Ember, Felix, and Kael learned about Ivy’s past life, they had been in disbelief for a long time.
They didn’t believe her; for a while they even thought Ivy was delusional or that what she described was some kind of vision she had mistaken for a previous life.
They came up with various theories and even considered taking her to a psychiatrist.
They even had a secret conversation in one of the houses while they were exploring the temporal storage for the first time.
However, the conclusion they reached was... if Ivy truly had some kind of disease... the temporal storage should have been a part of her imagination.
Temporal Storage was a rare treasure, and Ivy’s superpower guaranteed the truthfulness of her words.
Eventually they accepted Ivy’s explanation and even felt heartache.
But their parents’ calm reaction made them wonder if their parents already knew why Ivy might have lived another life.
As they talked, Kael suddenly said, "I remember something."
Ember and Felix immediately looked at him with bright, hungry eyes... gossip activated.
Kael rolled his eyes at them. To some extent, Ember and Felix really were alike: impulsive, straightforward in their affections and hates, and quick to act.
Taking a deep breath, Kael continued,
"From what I recall around the time Ivy was conceived, Mother kept saying Ivy could never be born a normal child. She said there was a greater chance Ivy might die before being born. But midway through the pregnancy, everything changed. All her complaints, fears, and insecurities seemed to vanish. It was as if she suddenly felt sure Ivy would be born without defects."
Ember’s and Felix’s eyes narrowed.
Kael went on,
"There’s another thing that bothered me: our parents’ reaction when they learned Ivy had been kidnapped. They looked like they’d expected it...not shocked or stunned."
Felix and Amber stared at Kael in confusion. "What do you mean?" they asked.
Kael pursed his lips, recalling the moment.
"When they found out about Ivy’s disappearance, Mother shouted that those bastards had stolen our Ivy; she didn’t look surprised so much as furious. She said she needed to find them and hunt them down right away."
Though Kael was only 6 years old at that time, because of his exceptional memory, he remembered the details.
"So... is there a possibility that the group responsible for Ivy’s kidnapping... might return again?" Ember questioned, her mind thought about a possibility and she blurted out,
"Wait... didn’t Ivy mention how she never knew until her last breath whether Father was killed by Talon base or some unknown group... what if... what if the group has been following Ivy since she acknowledged us in her past life and then started to hunt us?" Ember’s eyes widened the more she thought about her guess.
Kael’s eyes flashed with a deep look, while Felix’s expression turned grim. "If your theory is correct... the real danger may begin now."
"Fuck..." Ember held her head in her hand and whispered, "Why does the female lead of the apocalypse with the golden finger get to rest while my sister has to watch her back for all the dangers?"
She genuinely felt pity for her younger sister.
First, she wasn’t even pampered by their parents and suffered so much, while they enjoyed the wealthy life.
Now she found her, but she is the one funding and pampering them.
If it wasn’t for her, Ember might have never reunited with Jay in her entire life.
"No... no one gets to hurt my Ivy in this life... I will protect her till my last breath." Ember whispered, tears forming in her eyes.
"Fuck... I feel so frustrated... at times like this... I wish I had a punching bag or something." Felix murmured; the worry about his sister was eating him from inside.
"You know... we aren’t the only ones in Ivy’s temporal storage." Kael began in a soft voice, "I saw three gaunt people tied up, and if I am not wrong..."
