Chapter 269: Chapter 269: Mysterious Nightbane Family?
"Ronak reached out to me... zombies have started to flock to his base like bees attracted to a hive." Silas explained, his body tensed, while worry was written all over his face.
Ivy’s heart skipped a beat. A zombie flocking to base? A bold guess appeared in her mind.
In her previous life, few bases suffered the waves of zombie hordes for many years; the reasons remained unknown. However, later, during one of the tidal waves of zombies, a man discovered the common link.
The presence of the Zombie King disrupts the behavior of zombies lurking around a base. A newly acknowledged zombie king led zombies to attack a base in order to showcase their power.
However...
’It only has been 6 months since the arrival of zombie apocalypse... it makes no sense for a zombie king to appear now.’
Ivy fell into deep thought. Her mind was churning various unsaid and unexplored possibilities.
Sensing the strange silence in the atmosphere, Silas wiped away the sweat dripping from his forehead and asked, "Do you have any idea about this phenomenon?"
Ivy didn’t hide anything from him and told him her guess.
Silas didn’t rush to surmise; instead, he sat down on the sofa and softly drummed his finger on the soft yet smelly sofa surface.
"The possibility can’t be ignored." Silas muttered, his deep voice laced with steadiness, "I will let Ronak know."
"Hm." Ivy nodded, her heart tightening a little.
Many things needed her attention. One of them involved her returning to the Twilight base and helping the woman who had asked for help and aiding Ronak.
There was also Brenda. That woman still hasn’t paid for what she had done, and to make her regret all of her decisions... Ivy decided to show her what she missed.
All of these matters needed to be attended to as quickly as possible. God knows what condition her own base is in now.
..............
Jay stared at the table in front of him with a dumbfounded look.
What did he see?
Fish curry, roasted fish, cooked shrimp, vegetable soup, porridge, noodles, fried rice, and pudding as a dessert, and there was also milk.
In an apocalypse, having one meat dish is already considered a huge blessing.
However, here was the Nightbane family. Without hesitation, they had brought out more than five meat dishes and one vegetable dish.
There was even a dessert.
Were they truly kidding him, or did they see him as a son-in-law who needed to be fed? Otherwise, why would they bring out their entire ration and present it in front of him?
For a moment, he even felt that the Nightbane family was being very wasteful.
He didn’t need to be fed so much.
Then, he looked at Ember, who was still thin.
In his eyes, she was far too skinny, and he even thought of setting aside a portion of food so he could later feed it to her.
His thoughts were written all over his face, and the Nightbane family couldn’t help but press their lips together in amusement.
Meanwhile, Felix rolled his eyes and spoke disdainfully.
"Jay, you don’t need to think we are starving, Ember. These dishes were prepared especially for you."
Hearing those words, Jay was stunned before looking at Felix with an awkward smile, saying
"That won’t work... you all might not have much left if you fed me so much."
He said it in a teasing tone, but his eyes were flashing with nervousness, and he gave them an expectant gaze, as if hoping they would take the food back.
He knew the Nightbane family’s condition better than anyone else.
Even though they still had a thousand kilograms of rice left, that amount could only be exchanged for a hundred kilograms of meat and thirty kilograms of vegetables.
If they presented him with so much food, the only explanation was that they had used up their very last bit of wealth to appease him.
Though he was touched and even felt an urge to cry, for his Ember sake, he didn’t want the Nightbane family to go bankrupt just to serve him one meal.
Suddenly, a gentle breeze brushed past his cheeks, and for a moment, Jay closed his eyes in enjoyment.
The soft wind made him feel refreshed. It had been a long time since he had sat in a place where the temperature was just right... not too warm, not too cold.
He remembered how, in the past few weeks, after being tied to his bed, his mother hadn’t even turned on the fan.
He would get overheated while chained down, but now, the gentle breeze seemed to heal the lingering discomfort from those days.
Suddenly, he heard Felix’s lazy voice
"The Nightbane family had become rich again."
Hearing those words, Jay opened his eyes in confusion and stared at Felix with uncertainty.
Felix calmly said with a smug smile,
"I have gained a sister who would soon slap your family’s face."
After all, only a part of Ivy’s plans has been executed; the real show was about to begin now.
Hearing those words, Jay froze and stared at Felix as if he had grown two heads.
’Maybe he still holds grudge against my mother and is just threatening me?’ He thought.
He coughed lightly and said,
"I know what my mother has done, and I truly feel ashamed."
Jay’s heart was filled with guilt as he glanced at Ember before lowering his gaze.
Ember immediately held his hand under the table and gave it a gentle squeeze, offering him silent reassurance.
Meanwhile, Helena smiled and tried to dissipate the tension lingering in the air, saying,
"It was all in the past, and whatever happened next, I only hope you wouldn’t feel angry with us."
Hearing that, Jay looked at the Nightbane family’s mysterious smiles, and for some reason, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something had changed... as if the family had become much more confident than before.
What were they planning?
Before Jay could speak further, the fragrance of the food drifted into his nose, and he hesitantly glanced toward the table before looking away.
