"Hmm... Why not?"
I thought about it for a few seconds, then decided to go along with testing my blood just to see how valuable I was in this place.
"Okay!" The lamia said happily as she brought the device closer to me. "This device is powered by mana crystals. So all you have to do is add a drop of blood to it, and it will tell you your quality blood."
"Hmm... That sounds interesting," Khalissi hummed, looking at the device with interest. "You mind if I go first?"
As a demon and someone who possesses a lot of mana, she must’ve been curious as to what the quality rank of her blood would be.
"Not at all, go ahead," I responded, allowing her to go first.
Khalissi smiled and created a small wound on her hand, then dripped the blood onto the device. All while the lamia kept smiling without any reaction at all. It was a bit strange. Lamias were like vampires when it came to blood, so she should’ve at least reacted a bit. Maybe she just has that high of self-control, or years of being around blood have conditioned her mind.
The device glowed faintly as Khalissi’s blood was dripped onto it. Khalissi leaned back in her seat, arms and legs crossed with a smug smile on her face. She seemed confident that her blood would be of high quality.
Everyone waited with clear interest until the results were finally in.
"Oh wow! This is a first you have noble rank blood. This is the first time someone of such high quality blood has entered our establishment!" the lamia said with sparkling eyes. "Are you a noble vampire by chance? Only those of nobility have this high quality blood."
"Hmph! I thought it would be higher, but since you’re so amazed, I guess that’s good."
"It’s great! With just one vial of blood, you can afford anything in our inn!"
"Oh, in that case, I think I’ll have that drink you offered before... the cursed coffin one."
"Oh, you mean the reaper’s reserve. Excellent choice! We’ll have it with you in a minute. Can we interest you in anything else, madam?"
Seeing the exquisite service Khalissi was getting, I could feel a twinge of jealousy coming from Selthia.
"Ahem! I would like to test the quality of my blood too," Selthia said.
"Oh, of course!" The lamia said before slithering towards Selthia and testing her blood.
"You seem completely unaffected by blood, considering you’re a lamia," Selthia commented as she waited for her results.
"Oh," the maid’s expression drooped a little bit. "I don’t have that strong of a craving for blood. Whether it’s noble blood or slave blood, it doesn’t matter to me. I’m not all that picky. It’s a bit embarrassing, but a lot of the time, I have to force-feed myself so I don’t starve."
"So you’re defective," Khalissi commented.
"I guess you can call it that since my situation isn’t all that common. But I’ve heard that the daughter of a noble vampire also suffers from the same thing. Oops! I shouldn’t gossip. Papa warned me about that."
"Papa?" Sylvie questioned.
"Oh yes, the bartender. He’s the owner and also my father. By the way, if you guys are looking for rooms to stay, we have a few slots available."
Just then, the result of Selthia’s blood quality was in.
"Congrats! You have beast rank blood. With just 10 vials of blood, you can buy anything you see on the menu."
Regardless that her blood quality wasn’t as high as Khalissi’s, Selthia seemed pleased by her result nonetheless. One after the other, Kumo and Sylvie stepped up to test their blood too, and they both possessed the same quality blood as Selthia.
The witch had refused to test her blood, saying she already knew what it was, so the only person who hadn’t tested their blood was me.
"Would you like to test your blood quality too, mister?" the lamia asked in a charming voice.
"Sure," I responded before carefully creating a wound on my hand with my claws.
"Hmm? Is everything alright?" I questioned when I saw the lamia’s appearance begin to change. Her eyes had changed to blood red, and two pointed fangs now hung from her mouth. Her snake like tongue slithered out of her mouth, tasting the air while her face turned bright red.
"What is that? It smells so good," she whispered in a low voice as her breathing grew erratic.
It looked as if she didn’t hear a word I said, so I rested my hand on her shoulder and shook her gently. Her eyes returned to normal, and an embarrassed blush grew on her face.
"I am so very sorry!" She bowed her head and apologized. "I don’t know what came over me. I’ve never felt like this before. Anyways, do continue, let’s test your reading."
With the lamia now back to normal, I dropped my blood onto the device and my wound closed up immediately. Just as before, it glowed a faint blue light, and I expected the lamia to read my results, except this time she was frozen stiff.
"It can’t be... this must be an error," she mumbled to herself incoherently.
"What is it?" the witch perked up, clearly interested in what had gotten the lamia so spooked.
"It’s his blood... it’s Blessed rank."
"That’s impossible," the witch said in disbelief. "Only 7 persons in this entire city have Blessed blood, and they are all high up in the social ladder. This nobody... I mean person, can’t have such a high quality blood; it’s inconceivable."
"I’ll... I’ll have to report this to papa!" the lamia said before slithering off.
"Is it really such a big deal?" I questioned.
"Yes, of course it is! The quality blood that you have is enough to drive most people here wild. They’d do anything just to get a whiff of it! You’re practically the earth’s equivalent of a billionaire! This is enough to open doors you couldn’t possibly dream of! My master, the witch of Greed, also has Blessed blood because of the sheer amount of mana she possesses. The high quality blood she possessed made her one of the 4 queen witches who rules over this city."
So it is important. More than I thought. I think I just found my first weapon to work my way to the top.
Just then, the lamia girl along with her father came slithering over to us in a haste.
